With the current news about the likelihood of even less funding for public schools from the Texas legislature this session, it is even more critical that we receive your private, tax-deductible support. Please contribute to Wild for Cats today!

PRESS RELEASE

SEPTEMBER 9, 2009

WILD FOR CATS (ACADEMIC BOOSTER CLUB)
LAKE HIGHLANDS HIGH SCHOOL

Lake Highlands High School’s academic booster club initiative – known as “Wild for Cats” – is starting the 2009-10 school year with an impressive record of having already raised over $500,000 from over 250 donors, since its founding in 2005. These funds specifically and exclusively go to provide materials, equipment, and personnel to support the faculty, administration, and – most important – the students at Lake Highlands High School. Examples include: the purchase of cameras, projectors, PCs, headsets, books, and dictionaries; the funding of academic-recognition breakfasts, TAKS preparation, AP tutoring, and AVID program; and, this year, funding a brand new position for a College and Career Transition Counselor.

Lake Highlands High School Principal Walter Kelly states: “Wild for Cats makes a difference and provides the support and resources that retain great teachers, engage all students in a rigorous education, and transition students into colleges and careers.”

This year’s Wild for Cats Chairman Bill Keffer agrees: “Wild for Cats has already become an integral part of the success of Lake Highlands High School. The Lake Highlands community has really stepped up to provide the financial resources necessary to make sure our kids have access to an excellent education and the opportunity to succeed wherever they go after graduation. It is further testimony to what makes Lake Highlands a special place to live.”

Wild for Cats will be hosting meetings and events throughout the school year, at which supporters will have the opportunity to contribute. Contributions can also be made online by visiting our website at www.wildforcats.com.

Wild for Cats Chairman Bill Keffer announced that the 2009-10 fundraising effort raised over $117,000. The announcement was made at a reception at LHHS on May 13, where the new 2009-10 Major Donor Board was unveiled and hung in the school foyer. It was a worthy accomplishment, in a year where the news has been punctuated by stories of economic collapse, record foreclosures and bankruptcies, and government bailouts. Keffer will be staying on as Chairman for the 2010-11 school year, and his focus will be on how to raise even more money for LHHS to use for personnel, programs, and resources.

Wild for Cats Chairman Bill Keffer and LHHS Principal Walter Kelly made a brief presentation on Wild for Cats to LHHS teachers at a September faculty meeting. Many LHHS teachers, in addition to Mr. Kelly, are now making regular contributions to Wild for Cats through payroll deductions. With our own teachers on their limited incomes contributing financially to this program, it is even more incumbent on the Lake Highlands community and LHHS alumni to step up and make meaningful contributions to this great mission.

Wild for Cats Bill Keffer and LHHS Principal Walter Kelly made a presentation to representatives of numerous Lake Highlands homeowners associations attending the October meeting of the Lake Highlands Area Improvement Association. Jack White, who is a Wild for Cats Steering Committee member, is also the current President of LHAIA.

The LHHS Wranglers sponsored an incredibly entertaining open-air concert in the LHHS parking lot on Sunday evening, November 1, under a clear sky and full moon to the country-western tunes of LH alum and up-and-coming recording star Granger Smith. Guests in attendance brought lawn chairs, blankets, picnics, coolers, and snacks and tapped their feet to the original tunes of 1997 alumnus Granger Smith. Proceeds from the concert are earmarked for Wild for Cats.

Wild for Cats held a Fireside Chat fundraiser at the home of Wild for Cats Steering Committee Members Lizzy and Bill Cronin on November 5. LHHS Principal Walter Kelly, along with LHHS faculty members David Wood and Misti Benson, made presentations to the guests in attendance regarding the important contributions that funds raised by Wild for Cats have already made to LHHS since 2005. Wild for Cats Chairman Bill Keffer encouraged the guests to thoughtfully consider year-end, tax-deductible contributions to Wild for Cats.

Wild for Cats hosted Teacher Appreciation Night on the Press Box Patio at Wildcat-Ram Stadium at the last regular-season game for the playoff-bound LH Wildcat football team on Friday, November 6 against Molina, where LH handily won its last game 52-0. Teachers were treated to a delicious taco bar, coolers of soft drinks, and trays of homemade brownies and cookies. At halftime, Wildcat Mascot Caroline Keffer visited the Press Box Patio and fired up the guests for upcoming playoff action. Wild for Cats Steering Committee members and past Wild for Cats donors mingled with teachers, and everyone enjoyed a perfect night for football.
